Started by a writer under deadline...
TranscriptsNow was started by Dr. Emma
Hitt, a freelance medical writer and journalist. She found she
couldn't get a high quality, reasonably priced transcript of
her interviews sent back in time for her tight deadlines, so
she hired a part-time employee to do her transcribing. When
trying to get her transcriber some extra outside work, she received
a request to transcribe 30 hours of recording over the week
of Christmas/New Year's—more than one transcriber could possibly
do in the given time frame. A post for transcribers on the HittList™
(a free email containing medical writing jobs started by Dr.
Hitt in 2001) attracted several willing transcribers, and the
project was completed in time to meet the deadline. Not only
that, a startling number of exceptionally highly qualified people
offered to do the work. MDs, PhDs, people with years of medical
writing and editing experience. This sparked an idea....
The Idea
Why not provide a legitimate working opportunity to highly qualified people
who, for whatever reason, just want to do a little extra work from home
in their spare time, while matching their expertise to produce high quality
transcripts? With that thought, TranscriptsNow was born. At
the time of this writing, TranscriptsNow now has over 70 highly
qualified transcribers on hand, and this number is expected to increase
dramatically in 2008.
What We Do
Given the large number of people on hand ready to transcribe, TranscriptsNow
can cater to two needs unusually well: 1) large projects, eg, 12+ hours
of recording, needing turnaround in a day or so (such that one transcriber
could not possibly do it in time). And 2) shorter, 10- to 15-minute recordings
needing turnaround within an hour or two (such as needed by journalists
and writers under deadline).
Because of the breadth and depth of the expertise of our transcribers, we can handle complex subject areas that would likely be a serious challenge to most other transcription services.
